Cyclone Season Is Coming — Is Your Office Equipment Ready? A Mackay Business Guide

November to April in North Queensland means one thing for local businesses: keeping an eye on the Bureau.

Most Mackay business owners have a storm routine for the building — clear the yard, check the insurance, back up the files. But there’s a part of the office that almost never makes the checklist: the equipment itself.

Printers, copiers, phone systems, and networking gear cop the worst of wet season — power surges, humidity, water ingress, and days of downtime afterwards. A little preparation now can be the difference between reopening on Monday and waiting weeks for a replacement.

What Wet Season Actually Does to Office Equipment

It’s not just the dramatic stuff. Yes, a direct lightning strike or a foot of water through the office will write off a machine — but most storm-season damage is quieter than that.

Power surges and brownouts are the biggest culprit. When the grid flickers during a storm, voltage spikes travel straight into circuit boards. A multifunction printer is essentially a computer with a paper path — one surge can fry the controller board, and that’s often a write-off, not a repair.

Humidity and moisture do slower damage. Paper left exposed absorbs moisture, curls, and jams. Condensation inside a machine corrodes contacts and sensors. Even in a sealed office, weeks of tropical humidity take a toll on devices that were never designed for it.

And then there’s the aftermath — coming back to a machine that won’t power on, or one that seems fine but fails two weeks later from moisture damage nobody saw.

Before the Season: An Hour Now Saves Weeks Later

None of this is complicated. Most of it takes less than an hour:

  • Check your surge protection. Power boards with genuine surge protection — not just a $10 multi-plug — are the bare minimum. For critical devices, a small UPS (uninterruptible power supply) smooths out the spikes and gives you time to shut down properly.
  • Get equipment off the floor. If your printer or server sits at ankle height, even minor water ingress takes it out. Raise it on a stand or cabinet — especially in ground-level offices.
  • Store consumables properly. Keep paper and toner sealed in their packaging, off the floor, in the driest part of the office. A sodden carton of paper is a write-off; a dry one is money saved.
  • Know your shutdown procedure. When a cyclone warning is issued, equipment should be powered down properly — not just switched off at the wall mid-job. Make sure someone in the office knows the sequence.
  • Keep your service details handy. Save your supplier’s number and your device serials somewhere accessible — on paper, not just in the computer that might not turn on.

When a Warning’s Issued: The Last Hour Before You Lock Up

If a cyclone or severe storm is tracking toward Mackay, add these to your lock-up routine:

  • Power down properly and unplug. Shut devices down through their normal procedure, then disconnect from the wall. A surge protector helps with spikes — unplugging guarantees it.
  • Cover what you can’t move. Heavy-duty plastic sheeting or even garbage bags over equipment protects against roof leaks and blown-in water.
  • Move portable gear high. Laptops, handsets, and smaller devices go to the highest, most interior point of the building.
  • Redirect your phones. If customers will be calling while you’re closed, set your diversion before you leave — not after you’re home watching the radar.

Afterwards: The Mistake That Finishes the Job

Here’s where well-meaning businesses do the real damage: powering up too soon.

If equipment has been exposed to water, high humidity, or even just condensation from a powerless, un-airconditioned week — turning it on is what kills it. Moisture on a powered circuit board is fatal. The machine that “seemed fine” dies the moment someone hits the button.

The rule is simple: if in doubt, don’t power up — get it checked first. A technician inspection costs a fraction of a replacement device, and catches the corrosion and moisture damage you can’t see from the outside.

The same goes for paper and toner that got damp. Feed curled, moisture-swollen paper through a machine and you’ll be calling us anyway — for the jam that shredded itself around the fuser.

And While the Office Is Dark — Are Your Phones Still Answering?

Storms don’t just damage equipment — they cut you off from customers at exactly the wrong moment. If your phone system depends on hardware in the building and lines into it, a site outage means silence.

Businesses on cloud phone systems don’t have that problem — calls automatically reroute to mobiles, so customers reach your team even when the office is dark and empty. If your phones went quiet during the last big storm, that’s worth fixing before the next one.

We’re Local — We Know What a Mackay Summer Does

Status Pro has been keeping Mackay, Whitsunday, and Coalfields businesses running for more than 30 years — through every cyclone season of them. Our service team brings over 55 years of combined industry experience, and we’re based right here in Paget.

Before the season, we can help with a pre-season equipment check — surge protection, device placement, consumable storage, and shutdown procedures sorted in one visit. And when the weather’s been through, we’re the local team who actually turns up: post-storm inspections, moisture assessment, and honest advice on whether a device is worth saving.

If water does get in, we can also help with replacement options that fit your business — as an HP Master Dealer and trusted Sharp and OKI partner, we can usually have you printing again faster than an insurance claim can be processed.

Get Ahead of the Season

The Bureau’s long-range forecast is out, the wet season isn’t waiting, and neither are your customers. An hour of preparation now beats a fortnight of downtime in February.
